We spent three nights in the Monkbar Hotel recently and while we will probably go back again, there was two areas where the hotel fell down badly. The first was the smell of smoke throughout the reception and public areas. Although most of the guests seemed to be of the non-smoking persuasion, it seems that the management would rather offend them than the smokers. The second was the restaurant. We dined there on the first night rather than go out and search for a meal. We should have been warned by the lack of diners! The service though pleasant was amateurish, the menu was limited and overpriced, and the food was poorly cooked. In the succeeding nights of our stay we enjoyed excellent food at the right price in nearby restaurants. Monkbar Hotel would seem to be losing out badly, since by not providing a first class service in the restaurant they are obviously depriving themselves of a much more lucrative bar trade.
